Hideko Maehata (née Hideco Hyodo, 1914-1995), born in Hashimoto city, Wakayama Prefecture, won the gold medal for the 200-m breast-stroke event in the 1936 Olympuic Games in Berlin. She was the first Japanese female Olympic gold medalist.
