Hideyo Noguchi (1876-1928), a bacteriologist from Inawasiro, Fukusima prefecture, made significant achievements at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. He died of yellow fever in Africa while researching the disease. Burns he suffered as a child turned him to the study of medicine.
