NAOJ is the acronym for the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, which was established in 1988 as the interuniversity institute for astronomy. This minor planet, commemorating the twentieth anniversary of NAOJ, was discovered with a 0.5-m telescope located on the Mitaka campus of NAOJ.
