The Brazilian state of Minas Gerais (general mines), located in the mineral-rich uplands of the Brazilian highlands, is the storehouse of the mineral riches of the country. The discovery of gold in 1692 and diamonds in 1729 led to a mad rush to the new mines. Minas is also widely known for its semiprecious gems. (M 39656) _ _.
