Potosi, a famous mining town in Bolivia, was founded in 1546. During 1556-1783 almost 45~000 tons of pure silver were mined from the Cerro Rico, with 7000 tons going to the Spanish monarchy. Thousands of Incan workers died from exhaustion and mercury poisoning. They were replaced by African slaves.
