Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk Bonifatius (674?–754; Boniface, originally Wynfrieth) was sent as a missionary to the Teutons. He christianized Frisians, Thuringians and Hessians, established numerous bishoprics and became “Apostle of Germany”. Slain by the heathen Frisians, he was interred in Fulda and later sanctified.
