Diego Velásquez (1599-1660), the most famous Spanish painter of his time, was little known outside his country until the nineteenth century, when some of his later works, such as his La Venus del espejo (now commonly known as “The Rokeby Venus”) influenced Manet on his journey from realism to impressionism.
