Composer Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758–1834) set Goethe’s {see planet  (3047)} poems to music and wrote songs for male choirs. As director of the Berliner “Singakademie” beginning in 1800, he performed in particular the music of Bach {see planet  (1814)}. He founded in Berlin the first “Liedertafel”, the prototype for choral societies in cities and towns around the world. (M 41388) _ _.
