Named in memory of Frederic Sy, a computer at the Paris Observatory during 1879–1887 and an assistant astronomer at the Algiers Observatory during 1887–1918. An avid observer of minor planets and comets, he made the first discovery of a numbered minor planet at Algiers, (858) El Djezair, in 1916. (M 4419) _ _.
