Charleroi, built in 1666 on both sides of the Sambre river, is the largest city in Wallonia. Traces of metallurgy and commercial activity from prehistoric times have been found there, and the Romans built several temples and villas in the vicinity. The area is also known for its coal-mining industry, now terminated.
