Omeljan Pritsak (1919-2006), renowned for his Turkish and Ukrainian studies, cofounded the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University and taught there during 1964-1989. In 1990 he oversaw the opening of a branch of the Kiev Oriental Studies Institute in the Crimea.
