Named in memory of Fritz Zwicky (1898–1974), a Swiss citizen, who as a professor at Caltech, Pasadena, did pioneer work in many fields, notably in the study of supernovae and of clusters of galaxies, in high-energy astrophysics, and also in developing jet propulsion for airplanes and spacecraft.
