Poelkapelle, a village in West Flanders near the city of Ypres, has a rich historical past. In 1037 the place Capelle ten Poele (chapel near the swamp) was mentioned, from which the name Poelkapelle was derived. From several ancient documents it became clear that the village was attacked by Vikings, Frisians, Saxons and Franks.
