Jesse Douglas (1897–1965) was an American mathematician who first gave a general solution to the problem of Plateau: to prove the existence of a surface of least area bounded by a given contour. The problem had been worked on by many outstanding mathematician, including Riemann and Weierstrass {see planets (4167) and (14100), respectively}. (M 42367) _ _.
