Named for Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884), a physician in Kajaani and later professor of the Finnish language in Helsinki. While on extensive walking tours he wrote down a great number of runes and other traditional poems. He published the Finnish national epic Kalevala {see planet  (1454)} and numerous medical, philosophical and other works. (M 7944) _ _.
