Pavel Paľuš (b. 1936), director of the Astronomical Institute at Comenius Unversity during 1997-2001, is one of the founders of the observatory at Modra. Known for his research on solar prominences, he was a lecturer at the university in Bratislava for more than 40 years and educated many generations of the Slovak astronomers.
