Emile Léonard Mathieu (1835–1890) was an applied mathematician who worked on potential theory, elasticity, capillarity and celestial mechanics. He introduced the “Mathieu functions”, which are solutions of the two-dimensional wave equation for the motion of an elliptic membrane. (M 44595) _ _.
