Udinsk (Ulan-Ude), southeast of Lake Baikal at the confluence of the Selenga and Uda rivers, is the capital of the Buryat Republic in Siberia. Founded in 1666 by Russian Cossacks, it rapidly became a large trade center connecting Russia with China and Mongolia.
