Brooklyn-born Shemp Howard (Samuel Horwitz, 1895–1955) of Three Stooges fame was an original member during their 1920s vaudeville years. In 1946 he appeared on screen to replace his ailing brother Curly {see planet  (30441)}. Like Curly, Shemp was a naturally gifted comedian who brought his own style of comedy to the act.
