Named in honor of Eleanor F. (“Glo”) Helin, planetary scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in appreciation of her extraordinary contributions to the discovery of near-Earth minor planets. Her finding of 1976 AA (=2062 Aten) heralded the recognition of a new class of planet-crossers, and her initiation of the Palomar planet-crossing asteroid survey has resulted in increased worldwide interest in the observation of minor planets. Helin’s education and experience as a geologist and in the analysis of meteorites has provided a unique background for her interest in asteroids and comets. (M 11641) _ _.
