Werner Bischoff (1902-1993), a researcher at Carl Zeiss, Jena was engaged in designing the large Hamburg and Tautenburg Schmidt telescopes. Since 1953 a professor in Ilmenau, he was co-founder of the Faculty for Precision Mechanics and Optics and educated numerous engineers.
