Named in honor of Russell Cannon, astrophysicist, director of the Anglo-Australian Observatory, coordinating the activities of the joint observatories. His special interests are the study of stars in globular clusters and in dwarf galaxies of the Local Group. Cannon was officer-in-charge of the U.K. 1.2-m Schmidt from its first operation in 1974 and is responsible for setting the high standards for which it is renowned.
