The Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk was founded in 1628 as a trading post along the Yenisei river. In 1772 the German zoologist and botanist Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811) was shown there a 700-kg lump of metal that he identified as a new type of stony-iron meteorite, now known as a pallasite.
