Named in memory of William Graves Hoyt (1921–1985), American journalist and historian. His books Planet ‘X’ and Pluto, Lowell and Mars, and Coon Mountain Controversies (about Meteor Crater, Arizona), written while he was resident historian at Lowell Observatory, are widely recognized as major contributions to the history of planetary science.
