Named in memory of the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler (1803-1853), professor of mathematics and geometry at the Technical University in Prague and later the first director of the Physical Institute in Vienna. The well-known effect relating a shift in observed wavelength to the relative motion of source and observer was formulated by Doppler in Prague in his book Ueber das farbige Licht der Doppelsterne (1842). Name suggested by J. Ticha and M. Šolc.
