An Indian princess and daughter of Powhatan, celebrated sachem and chief of the Chickahominy tribe of Virginia, Pocahontas (c. 1595–1617) developed a warm friendship for the English colonists and rendered them many services, including the rescue of their leader, Captain John Smith, from her father. Her marriage to John Rolfe pioneered the peace between the colonists and the native Americans. (M 17657) _ _.
