Named for Robert P. Sharp, emeritus professor of geology at the California Institute of Technology. A leading American geomorphologist, Sharp is best known for his work on glaciers and the movement of desert sand. He played a prominent role in the interpretation of the surface features of Mars from images returned by early spacecraft missions.
