Named in honor of Jane X. Luu (1963– ) for her research on the small bodies of the solar system. Luu is best known for her work with David Jewitt in discovering the first and subsequent members of the Kuiper belt, as well as in following up with physical studies of those bodies. She has also contributed the most stringent upper limits on the existence of dusty comae around minor planets that might be dormant or extinct comets. (M 27459) _ _.
