Named for the former principality of Anhalt, at the northern border of the Harz mountains. About 1770, Prince Leopold Franz of Anhalt built the Wörlitz castle in a great park that was much praised by Goethe {see planet  (3047)}. Anhalt was united with the Prussian province of Sachsen {see planet  (5866)} to form the state of Sachsen-Anhalt. (M 24919) _ _.
