Named in honor of Augustin Susumu Yamamoto (b. 1915), agronomist and director of the Yamamoto Observatory and, from 1988 to 1994, chairman of the board of directors of the Oriental Astronomical Association, which maintains its headquarters there. He published a Catalogue of Cometary Orbits in 1936. His father was the astronomer Issei Yamamoto. Name proposed by the discoverer following a suggestion by I. Hasegawa and T. Sato.
