Named in memory of Eduard Čech (1893-1960), Czech mathematician, professor at Charles University in Prague and Masaryk University in Brno. One of his papers, On bicompact spaces, introduced what today is called the Stone-Čech compactification of regular topological spaces. His research in topology is fundamental, but his work was also important in the development of functional analysis. Name proposed by J. Ticha and Z. Moravec following a number of suggestions from Charles University.
