Named for a toll road, the Nishiseto Expressway, whose nickname is Shimanami Kaido. The third road connecting the islands of Honshu and Shikoku {see planet  (4223)}, Shimanami Kaido is 60 km long and includes ten long-span bridges. Scheduled for use starting 1999 May 1, it is expected to encourage economic activity by increasing the interchange of goods and personnel in the Nishiseto area. (M 34629) _ _.
