Named for the French city in the Lorraine region of France, at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers. It derives its name from the Gallic tribe Mediomatrici. In 843 it became the capital of Lorraine {see planet (1114)}. The Metz cathedral has remarkable stained glass windows from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. (M 34353) _ _.
