The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in The Netherlands, dedicated in 1970, has excelled in studies of neutral hydrogen in nearby and distant galaxies, in continuum studies of radio galaxies, and in large-scale surveys. It is also an important part of the European VLBI network. The name was suggested by B. Burton.
