Named in honor of Robert L. Sutton, geologist of the U.S. Geological Survey. As a member of the field geology investigation team for the Apollo lunar landing missions, Sutton had the unique responsibility of identifying the exact location, orientation and geologic field relationships of each sample returned from the Moon. This information is the necessary link that ties the detailed analyses of the returned samples to the heavenly body from which the samples were obtained and is crucial to the correct interpretation of many of the laboratory observations.
